Battling zebras

This is one of my older photos from Ngala, South Africa, revived by Jason Penney. It shows male zebras battling for dominance. Looking at it again, I am struck by the nonchalance of the impalas, feeding and resting in the background, to this crashing activity with their 'been there, seen that' attitude .

At the largest sizes, check out the look the tick bird is giving the zebra, and the expression on the impala's face.
Zebra foals have a brownish coat that they lose about the time they are weaned. This colt is starting to lose hers.

The warts that give the wart hogs their name are the four fleshy protruburances in the males that you can see here. They serve as a fat reservoirs, and for defense when males fight.

We were watching a large group of zebra when two males started having a battle royal that went on for several minutes before a 'winner' was decided. More pics to come
These zebra were engaged in some serious fighting, including kicks to the head and biting hard enough to draw blood. Dominance fight to control a harem, I think.
