Juvenile Southern Ground Hornbill

A juvenile Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) walks though dry grass at the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project, South Africa. The Hornbills have lifespans in the range of 50-60 years, and up to 70 in captivity. They do not reach sexual maturity until 4-6 years old, and begin breeding around 10 years old. Juveniles, up six years old, lack the prominent red pouch of the adults , but have a duller patch of grey in its place.

    We can all hope there will be a recognizable, livable world for this juvenile to live out a normal lifespan in. Very interesting info about the longevity of these birds.

    The white 'flowers' that you referenced in your comment on my 'Red all over' montage were actually created by selecting blooms in the photos of the red flowers, filling with selections with solid white, and transferring the selections to the montage, where I could resize, flip, rotate, etc. those layers.

    This is a wonderful photo of the Hornbill. Wow! They can live 50-60 years! Yes, I agree with you, I sure hope those Gargoyles survived the fire.
