Commando Memorial

Commando Memorial, 1952, to the men of the British Commando Forces of WWII who trained at nearby Archnacarry Castle, Spean Bridge, Scottish Highlands. The Commandos were established by Churchill after Dunkirk in June 1940. They are looking south towards Ben Nevis, the area shown in yesterday's photo, where they did their training.

  • The cruise ship Nova Spero, Stornaway, passes through a Neptune's staircase lock, built by Thomas Telford between 1803 and 1822, and the Banavie Swing Bridge on the Caledonian Canal, Fort William, Scotland. The Caledonian canal, built in the early 19th C, joins the E. Coast of Scotland with the W. Coast, running from Inverness to Fort Willliam down a series of lochs (Ness, Ochy and Oich) and locks ending with the 8 staircase lock of Neptune's staircase at Loch Linnhe.

    Wonderful shot of the Commando memorial. I always find this place so moving, especially now that they have the garden of remembrance next to it. It's a fine memorial to the men who trained in this area as commandos and served in WWII.
