Lenticular clouds at sunset
In Patagonia it pays to keep one eye on the clouds because the combination of wind and mountains makes for some spectacular cloud formations. Just after I photographed the Kelvin-Helmholtz wave clouds, I saw these marvellous Altocumulus Standing Lenticular (ACSL) clouds near Lago Amarga, Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia. As the air rushes over the mountains, it undulates, forming stacks of standing waves over and in the lee of the mountains. Air rises on one side of a standing wave -- condensing water vapor into laminar, layered formations like this -- and sinks on the other.
