Prince Rupert, Hartley Bay & vicinity
Read MorePrince Rupert harbour
Prince Rupert is the gateway to the northern BC coast and the Great Bear Rainforest and is only one of two places between Vancouver BC and Skagway Alaska where a road from the interior reaches the coast. It is the only Canadian port of call on the Alaska Marine Highway system. In this panorama of Prince Rupert, taken from my room at a B&B, you can see the Polar Prince ice breaker to the left and a coast guard ship to the far right, plus spill response vessels, tugs, a freighter and a number of pleasure craft. Prince Rupert is the only search and rescue station for the entire northern BC coastline. I caught a small ferry here to get down the coast to the small Gitga'at community of Hartley Bay, my base for my spirit bear photography (best larger)
More about the Polar Prince. 'Canada C3' is a celebration of Canada's 150th Anniversary of Confederation in 2017. I was able to catch a photo of the icebreaker Polar Prince at sunset in its port of call in Prince Rupert, British Columbia on its epic 150-day sailing journey from Atlantic to Pacific going from Toronto to Victoria via the Northwest Passage, travelling through 3 oceans and coastlines (C3).
