Flying low

Everywhere you look near the shore in Newfoundland you see birds, especially gulls. In this image a Herring gull (Larus argentatus )is flying over the rocky shore and the rock weed (Ascophyllum nodosumin) in the intertidal zone at the beach near L'anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland (best larger).

Re cropping, I thought about it when I did the initial edit, but IMO the shot was as much about the environment as the bird, so I went for a wider crop.

  • L'anse aux Meadows is thought to be the location of the first Viking settlement in North America. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In this image the visitor center is framed by the 'Meeting of the two worlds' sculpture, completed in two pieces, one by Newfoundland sculptor Luben Boykov and the other by Swedish sculptor Richard Brixel. The two elements of the 3000 pound bronze sculpture symbolically correspond to the geographic points of departure and landing of the Vikings, and their subsequent meeting with Aboriginal peoples. I, too (as Judy - aka fotoeffects has stated) would love to see a closer crop to get a better viewing of the flying gull!

Perhaps a descendant of gulls that flew over the beach when the Vikings were in residence.
