This is the most famous shrine in Myanmar.  According to legend, 8 of the Buddha's hairs are enshrined beneath the dome.  The tradition is to make three clockwise circuits of the pagoda.

The eight Planetary Positions represent the eight days of the week.  The Burmese split Wednesday into two days, before noon and after noon.  You worship at the day of the week you were born.

Thanaka is a cosmetic paste made from ground bark from the Thanaka tree that is widely used in Myanmar, mosty by women.  It smells something like sandalwood and has a number of beneficial properties including protection from sunburn, preventing acne and promoting a smooth, beautiful skin.

White elephants (the live version) are revered in Myanmar and are symbols of power and prosperity.  The military rulers of Myanmar have three white elephants housed near Yangon, which symbolize their 'right to rule'
