Every day a train leaves from Mandalay to travel through mountainous terrain to the hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin, the former British Hill station of Maymyo, established in 1896 (May Town named after Colonel May, a veteran of the Indian mutiny). The train line was built by the British and it is one of South East Asia's great train routes, much loved by train afficionados. The train itself is sparse on comfort (the 1st class seats are made of coconut shell hair) and the journey itself takes twice as long as by going by road, but it is considered by train bluffs to be something of a masterpiece.

For the next 2 or 3 days, I'll post photos of the train journey. Today's photos of the train itself, the stations, the local people and the surrounds can be seen here: http://goo.gl/pcsH5E

Re Jerry's comment; not quite hanging on the outside of the train, but I waited until the train went around a curve and leaned out to take the shot.

The highlight of the Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin train is the famous Gok Hteik Viaduct, which spans a gorge around 1000 feet deep. The viaduct was constructed in just nine months, and at the time of construction was the 2nd longest bridge in the world. It was renovated in 1951 to repair WWII bombing, and renovated again in the 90’s. It is again in desperate need of repair and the train currently takes 20 minutes to cross in an attempt to minimize further damage (and the train plunging into the gorge). Note the rust on the track bed. With no protection on either side, as seen in this shot, for many it is nothing short of terrifying!

Other photos of the viaduct and along the route can be seen here: http://goo.gl/UnIk8D

The trestle bridge is much lower than the level of the viaduct and was used to bring building materials for the construction of the Viaduct.
