Flexible to the max!

(Even in my prime as a practitioner of yoga I wasn't even a fraction this flexible!)

It was a treat to go to a cultural performance in Ulaan Baatar, but the lightening and the background was pretty awful for taking photos. It was an interesting photographic challenge to try to salvage something of the interesting performances. My solution was to select the figures, apply a circular gradient behind them and then fade the gradient so some of the background showed through.

There is a lot of new construction in Ulaan Baator, financed primarily by the Chinese and the Koreans. What fascinated me was that the glass seemed to be significantly warped (much more than in North America), leading to some quite distorted reflections.
A tobhuur is a 2-stringed instrument that is plucked and used for accompanying singing.

Mongolian throat singing (hoomii or hooliin) is an ancient tradition that allows the singer to create anywhere from two to four notes at the exact same time. It is fascinating and unique to listen to: an example of male throat singing can be heard here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5wHbIWH_NGc or go here for a female throat singer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=qNFSB4PnVPI

Interestingly, the male throat singer in the link was filmed in Ulaan Baatar at the same theatre where I took my photos.
The last few pics featuring Mongolian performers in traditional dress, singing traditional songs, and playing traditional instruments (none of which I'd ever heard of before), can be seen here: http://goo.gl/hCJpFX
