Prayer wheels, stupa, prayer flags and tree branches, Alchi Choskhor, Ladakh. Alchi Choskhor is a very old monastic complex dating as far back as the 10th century. It is built in the old style in the town centre of Alchi along the Indus River. After the 12 century Buddhist monasteries were built on the tops of hills. Alchi Choskhor has narrow sight lines and can be difficult to photograph, and although it contains many precious art treasures in the buildings, their photography is forbidden. In this view the poplar trees that grow along the Indus River cast their bare branch winter shadows on the scene. It is customary to turn the brass prayer wheels (at the right) clockwise in the Buddhist tradition, as you pass by.
Yes, Linda, everyone turns the wheels...make sure you get the direction correct.

on February 21, 2019It's hard to imagine this place going as far back as the 10th century--we think of some of our buildings as "old" when they are under 100 years old. And then we go and tear them down....

on February 21, 2019Ooops, typo (see previous comment). What I REALLY meant is...…
It's a good thing that those of different faiths (religious beliefs) can turn the prayer wheel! BTW, your comment on my "Daily Photo" initiated thoughts that I would love to respond to with words and it's so hard not to do so; but, in this case and to keep the peace...….."silence is truly golden."
