It was pouring rain at the Toshogu Shrine, a shrine dedicated to Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), who brought a long period of civil wars to an end and united all of Japan. The shrine, founded in 1617, is on Mount Kuno (Kunosan) and his tomb is at the top of the mountain.

Everyone had umbrellas and I starting noticing that they lent a spot of colour to an otherwise drab day. I saw this little girl with her bright blue umbrella and pink jacket and asked her to pose for me and she obliged me with a sweet smile.

On a dark, rainy day this young Shinto priestess in her white top and red skirt add a touch of colour to the ornate temple doorways. I liked the black, red and gold colour scheme, as well.
