Shinkansen

A photo of the famous Japanese bullet train arriving at Kobe Station. Moments after taking this photo we boarded the train for the fast trip to Shizuoka. The trains operate at maximum speeds of 240–320 km/h (150–200 mph) and have a beautiful streamlined shape.

Photo from one Shinkansen of another passing in opposite directions, each at ~300 km/hour, so the combined speed was 600 km/hr. The dark rectangles in the upper half are the windows of the other train. The blue lines at the bottom are the paint lines that extend the whole length of the train, so they look clear.

Photo of the railway tracks from the Shinkanson going by at 300 km/hr. Since the tracks themselves are uniform and extend in a straight line for long distances, they look fairly clear.

The Japanese bullet trains (Shinkansen) travel at ~300 km/hr. I had fun trying to take shots from the train that gave the impression of the speed we were travelling. While things seen at a distance look pretty clear, things close to the train are blurred into abstract forms. This shot was taken as we went through a train station and all the vending machines, signs and shops by the tracks made a colourful abstract blur.

I occasionally like to experiment at getting interesting in camera effects that can't easily be mimicked by filters. All shots today were as taken from the camera with no use of digital filters.
Some of you commented that the view from the fast Japanese train would make for some great blurred photos. This is a view out the window of the Bullet Train (Shinkansen) as it passed a rail yard in which a number of stationary Shinkansen were standing.

I shot it at the f22, 100 ISO to get the lowest shutter speed and then panned AGAINST the forward motion of the train.
• The fish market

I had a chance to visit a large fish market by the harbour in Shimizu, Japan. There was an incredible variety of fresh and dried fish on sale and a lot of buying and selling activity.

Julianne Savage asked about the mask. It is to prevent germs from spreading when someone has a cold or flu. It is quite common in Japan and China for people to wear face masks to prevent infections from spreading.
