Grey heron, Naruto Harbour, Shikoku Island, Japan. The Grey herons in Naruto are thoroughly urbanized and seem to have a commensal relationship with the fisherman.

This is a very busy image and the bird, although in plain sight, is almost invisible at smaller sizes (try larger, too). Normally I like much simpler images that feature a single subject, but the chaos of this scene, for some reason, appealed to me and prompted the choice of the caption.
• The Kazurabashi Suspension Bridge (best larger)

This bridge, in the mountains of Shikoku Island, is a popular Sunday outing for the local people of Tokushima, Japan, especially when the leaves are starting to turn. The people were clinging pretty tightly to the side supports.

I sent my D800 in for cleaning and a 'tune-up' to Nikon and they reported it as 'unrepairable' and gave me a discount on the new D810, which I picked up today. All my shots from Japan were taken on my back-up D7100, but now I have the D810 to test out on my next trip.

Ilene, I complained to Nikon that the LED screen was out of focus and I couldn't tell if my shots were sharp (they were, but it wasn't obvious until I downloaded them onto my computer). They determined that it was the result of an impact to the camera and it couldn't be fixed. Haven't had a chance to use the D810 yet, but reviews suggest that it has some improved features over the d800.
Although vine suspension bridges used to be common in Japan (perhaps because they were easily chopped down if you were being pursued) they are rare nowadays. This used to be the only way to cross the Iya River. Rebuilt every three years, this bridge is designated as a national important folkloric property and is one of Japan's three rare bridges.
• Barbecue, Japanese style

This small roadside BBQ stand, near the Kazurabashi Suspension Bridge (a popular tourist spot in the mountains), was selling grilled fish and BBQ sticks with different kinds of potatoes. The shop's owner kept the turnstyle rotating so the food cooked evenly. The prices, seen on the sign at the back were from around $3 to $5. The sign above the food translates literally to 'hold and go home', meaning 'take out'.
I like the way this fisherman was fishing using a centuries old technique next to the large modern boats fitted with the latest new technologies.
The worn nets have taken on a pinkish colour, fitting in with the pink theme for today.

Photo just taken a few minutes ago at the harbour at Naruto on Shikoku Island, Japan. I had a short conversation with this fisherman who said it was OK to take his picture. He said that repairing the nets wasn't hard work on the land, since he'd been doing it all his life, but when he had to repair the nets out on the boat on the open ocean, it could be very difficult.
The harbour at Nauto had many grey herons (Ardea cinerea) sitting on the boats and the floats, probably waiting for handouts.
