• The Great Buddha of Kamakura

The famous Great Buddha of Kamakura is a huge pre-modern bronze statue of Amitabha Buddha, over 13 m (44 ft) tall, weighing over 93 tons. It was cast around 1252, replacing a damaged wooden version. It is located at the Kotoku-in Temple in Kamakura, Japan, and is a popular pilgrimage site.

Can you imagine the remarkable job done by the caster, Ono Goroemon, to cast a statue of this size? Large sculptures were generally cast in one piece with a single pour, but one this size this may have been cast in several pieces. It is hollow on the inside to reduce the weight and amount of material required. Originally it was gilded, and some traces of gold remain.

It was hard to get a clear shot of the Buddha because of the huge crowds, so I used an ultra wide-angle lens to get a shot from right up close to the base of the statue.
