Nap time
A somewhat unkempt black Icelandic horse resting in a muddy field, Horn Herstar, Stokksnes Peninsula, Iceland. Icelandic horses are a hardy, long-lived small horse bred from ponies brought over by the Vikings in the 9th and 10th century. The breed is kept pure by forbidding the import of other breeds of horses into Iceland. It is an extremely popular breed worldwide, known for its 5 gaits (2 more than other horses) and is still used for traditional sheep herding in its native country. It has a double coat that helps it survive the harsh winter conditions.
