  • "H" is for hosta<br /> <br /> I've been having problems finding examples of H, I, J, etc in my garden. But then I found my hosta plant which is a little the worse for wear after surviving insects and a recent torrential rain. So here it is, lit by the dappled light from my dogwood tree, warts and all, but it is a realistic, if not beautiful "H".<br /> <br /> But that's not the end of the story, since I looked over at my next door neighbours yard and saw some colourful pink hostas that looked quite perfect, so I went next door and photographed them. The joke was on me, since, when I looked at an enlarged version of the beautiful photo I took of the pink hosta, it turned out to be a fake hosta, made of some kind of cloth, LOL!   • Old Town Basel on the Rhine River<br /> <br /> Munster Cathedral (built in different stages between 1019 and 1500) and medieval houses lining the Rhine River, Basel, Switzerland<br /> <br /> Basel has a wonderful Old Town (Grossbasel) with many buildings dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.   • Old decaying rail car on abandoned rail line.<br /> <br /> The Western Copper Mine was located about 8 km up the Khutze valley, British Columbia. The mine was connected to the head of Khutze Inlet by the tramway that you see here. At the end of the railway, the minerals were loaded onto barges at a wharf and taken out by sea. The property was active prior to 1910, and again, under several different owners, between 1925 and 1932.   • Wild lupines and snow field<br /> <br /> Lupinus perennis, Mussel Creek, British Columbia<br /> <br /> The Great Bear Rainforest has a very rich wildflower community, especially in the late spring.   • Grizzly bear feasting on sedge grass <br /> <br /> Khutze Inlet, Great Bear Rainforest, British Columbia<br /> <br /> Some of you may have been wondering where are the great bears in the Great Bear Rainforest. Well they are there all right. This photo is of a 3 year old cub. The cubs are abandoned to fend for themselves after their 3rd winter so their mothers can breed again. After their long winter hibernation, all of the bears find their way down to the protein-rich beds of sedge grass in the river estuaries at the heads of inlets such as Khutze Inlet. This is their main source of nutrition until the berry crops ripen and the salmon find their way back to the rivers. Check out the large sizes to see the details, including the cropped grass.<br /> <br /> Update: I took all of the bear shots from a zodiac from around 50 ft away, using the water channels that run through the sedge grass meadows at high tide.   • 'G' is for Growing Great Greenhouse veGGies, with Green (and ripe) tomatoes, and Green peppers.<br /> <br /> Update for fotoeffects; the greenhouse is in my backyard next to the raised bed gardens. In Vancouver, having the greenhouse extends my growing season by around 4 months.
  • 'F' is for furled fern frond foto (try repeating that quickly a few times LOL)<br /> <br /> As of supper time today I still hadn't done my F-day foto. So I grabbed my camera and went out into the garden to look for something, and rejected flowers as being too obvious. Then I saw this tiny fern sticking up out of the grass and grabbed my macro lens to capture it before the light disappeared.<br /> <br /> My evening shot from Honolulu never did appear yesterday and can still be seen here: <a href="http://goo.gl/7MSuuU">http://goo.gl/7MSuuU</a>
  • 'E' is for eggplant.<br /> <br /> Another one from my garden. These are a miniature eggplant that are almost fully grown, and are quite delicious when cooked up. Re Julieanne's comment, they do need to be cooked. I often do them in a stirfry with ground pork, garlic and soy sauce.<br /> <br /> Update: It appears that SM has failed to fix the problem with the <a href="http://www.smumug.com/popular/today">http://www.smumug.com/popular/today</a> site and all it shows is a blank page with a 'Gallery is Empty' notice! Astonishing incompetence.
  • 'D' is for daily devouring of decadently delicious deli delights!<br /> <br /> Deli at Kalakawai Market, Kailua, Oahu with loads of details (and delights) at larger sizes.<br /> <br /> Update: This market and deli is a perfect example of old Hawaii (as opposed to the glitz and crowds of Waikiki). It has been a part of life for the community on the east side of Oahu since 1932, and tourists rarely go there. Last year it won 3rd place in the Honolulu Magazine Hale’Aina Awards for the Best Neighbourhood Restaurant. This is the kind of place I love to find and photograph. The photo was taken in a very quick break between the constant stream of customers who obscured the food display, so there wasn't an opportunity to control the lighting. I considered TheSideStreet's suggestion about focussing more light on the cute guy (which could have been done after the fact in Photoshop), but decided that he is a part of the overall scene and not the focus of the photo.<br /> <br /> 'D' is also for Dill, Dog, and Ducks, Ducks, and more Ducks; see here: <a href="http://goo.gl/qn5Oap">http://goo.gl/qn5Oap</a>
  • 'C' Day. Cool as a cucumber -1<br /> <br /> This is a baby English cucumber that is growing up in my organic greenhouse<br /> <br /> See here for another shot of another baby Cucumber, and for a Cauliflower and Carrots in the ground, all growing in the garden: <a href="http://goo.gl/U3m9Dy">http://goo.gl/U3m9Dy</a>. So far I haven't had to leave the garden for my alphabet posts, but don't know how long I can keep it up LOL.
  • Beautiful Bumble Bee Buzzing Busily By a Blossom<br /> <br /> Before I left for Hawaii, I went into my garden for inspiration for 'B' day. I was going to post the brocolli shot (see here: <a href="http://goo.gl/HVf6T">http://goo.gl/HVf6T</a> ) but then saw the bumble bees on the allium blossom and knew that this would be a more interesting 'B' image.
  • 'A' is for Asparagus.<br /> <br /> When I gave it a bit of thought, I have a lot of 'A's in my garden, including Allium and Alyssum (see here <a href="http://goo.gl/JHvfn">http://goo.gl/JHvfn</a>), Azaleas (which have already stopped blooming), and Artichokes (but I just picked the last one the other day).<br /> <br /> News bulletin: The baby barn swallows have fledged and are now swooping around the yard with their parents, who are now officially 'empty nesters'. It is amazing to me how quickly they go from helpless chicks to accomplished aerial acrobats!!! (Ha, 3 'A's in a row, I must have 'A' on the mind LOL)
