Portrait of a raven (best large)
The raven is one of the totemic figures of the people of Klemtu, BC. I was lucky to find this beautiful bird sitting on the railing by the harbour posing for his picture.
• Bearded tree

Small tree growing out of old stump on the shores of Mussel Creek. The tree is already covered with old man's beard lichen and moss. Lupines are growing in the background. Mid-coast British Columbia
• Fat harbour seal draped over a small rock

This well-fed seal was lying in the sun in the Mussel Creek estuary in the Fjordland Conservancy of mid-coast British Columbia. There was only a small piece of rock protruding from the water and the seal had done her best to arrange herself on top of the rock.

Other pictures of the area, including a wonderful waterfall, can be seen here: http://goo.gl/aMgY5a
• A beautiful morning in the Great Bear Rainforest

Boater enjoying the scenery, Mussel Inlet, mid-coast British Columbia. This area is part of the Fiordland Conservancy, a large marine park that includes one of the finest examples of glacially gouged fiords on the British Columbia coast, where sheer granite cliffs rise more than 1000 metres out of the sea. Other shots of the cliffs and waterfalls of this beautiful area can be seen here: http://goo.gl/cvCAkd
• Heavily laden tanker passing under the Mittlere Bridge heading upstream against a strong current, Basel, Switzerland (best at larger size). Two trams are passing over the bridge above.

The Rhine River was in flood and there wasn't a lot of clearance under the bridge. From this angle it looks like the boat is about to collide with the bridge. To see what happened, click here: http://goo.gl/xGmwRe
• 'M' is for mums

Well I made it halfway through the alphabet using photos from my garden. Applying a spherical filter gave interest to the composition of an open mum flower and two buds, and makes it look like the flowers are encased in a large bubble. Now comes the hard part; not sure I have an 'N' for next week.

Update: just realized that the pink also could represent breast cancer awareness month.

The original and also my alternate 'M', which is munched mushrooms, can be seen here: http://goo.gl/E1rFRf
• Closed containment salmon farm with morning mist, ripples and reflections, Mussel Inlet, mid-coast BC

Salmon farming is very controversial in British Columbia and a lot of BC residents, myself included, refuse to eat farmed salmon as there is evidence that salmon farming, particularly open pen farms, is threatening the survival of the wild stocks. Closed containment farms, such as the one seen here can eliminate some of the hazards to the wild stocks, but are still a threat.

Other photos of the salmon farms can be seen here: http://goo.gl/MitWGu
• Waterfalls emerging from the mist

In the spring the high snowfields in the Cascade Mountains of the Great Bear Rainforest start to melt and the water cascades down the walls of the fjords into the sea.
• Door to the Klemtu Big House

The door contains totemic figures for the four clans that live in Klemtu, including, going clockwise from upper left: raven, killer whale, eagle and wolf.
• 'L' is for Lovely Lupines (better at larger sizes)

This photo is not from my garden, but I like it for 'L'. However, my alternate 'L' today IS from my garden, and can be seen here: http://goo.gl/A9cLGG
• Young novice monk rushing to get to his dinner spot.

Mahagandayon, Amarapura, Myanmar. This monastery is a huge centre for Buddhist studies in Myanmar and home to around 1000-2000 monks. Every day they receive a gift of food from the people and in return they give the people the gift of Buddhist teachings.

Other shots of the monks at their midday meal can be seen here: http://goo.gl/yRl5O1
• Woman lay worker peeling garlic for use in the monk's midday meal, Mahagandayon Monastery, Amarapura, Myanmar.

This monastery is a teaching monastery and preparing lunch for several hundred hungry young monk's requires a lot of garlic and other types of food. Much of the labour for this, and the food, is donated by the surrounding community. Other photos about the preparing the monk's midday meal can be seen here: http://goo.gl/Jkmzh3
• Caught them trying to stifle a smile!

Minangkabau bride and groom, Cupek, West Sumatra

The Minangkabau people are traditionally very solemn when their photos are taken, for example, see here: http://goo.gl/pLQq0N
I finally managed to capture the bride and groom smiling.
• 'K' is for kale

When I went out to the garden a couple of mornings ago to photograph my winter kale plant, I found it covered with very tiny drops of dew. The fringed edges of the leaves, each outlined with the tiny round droplets of dew made for an interesting texture (best seen at the largest size).
