Remains of a Blackhouse
The remains of an old Blackhouse can be seen on the way up the hill to the ancient broch of Dun Carloway, Isle of Lewis, Scotland. These thick walled, low to the ground, structures were the homes of crofters and their animals, built to withstand the harsh winter weather. The thick drystone walls would have been topped with thatched roofs and the dark interior heated with smoky peat fires.

3 weeks agoClearly a very sturdy rock foundation to remain intact all of these years. Wonderfully captured, Terry.

3 weeks agoOutstanding shot Terry and very interesting history! I'm surprised at how thick the walls were but the explanation makes sense.

3 weeks agoThe houses certainly were well insulated with feet of stone! Smoky peat fires don't sound like a pleasant way to live, however!

3 weeks agoIt's hard for my modern mind to fathom what life would be like living in these conditions, particularly in their harsh winters. But I do love the design and the old stones. I wonder if the smaller room to the side was the master bedroom, or the kitchen? Beautiful capture Terry, and awesome POV. Thanks too for catching my typo on my post today. I've corrected it. Oftentimes I get in a rush to right the commentary and don't take the time to proof read, so I appreciate you bringing it to my attention.

3 weeks agoNot just the Blackhouse, remains of what looks like either a boundary bank or runrig for growing crops (diagonally beyond the main house). Nice PoV on the whole site.
