Urchin barrens

A sea urchin invasion seen just below the water line with a sea cucumber mid left, Juan Perez Sound, Haida Gwaii, BC. The urchins have destroyed the kelp beds and the local community is attempting to control them by the labour intensive tactic of crushing them and releasing the nutrients to the environment. Other attempts involve relocating them to urchin farms where they can be grown for the commercial market.

Excellent capture to show the degree of the problem with all of those urchins in a small area. I like the second solution better but it appears that both are necessary.

May be an issue but it makes it an incurable shot

Excellent view of the tideline, and a peek into what is happening underwater. I'm glad to hear that they are attempting to turn the tide, so to speak.

You could be an environmental photographer, or at least teach it. Wonderful dramatic exposition of an invasive species.
