Raven/Shark totem pole
Many wonderful carved totem poles can be seen along the forest walk in the Sitka National Historic Park, Alaska. The original Raven/Shark pole was carved in 1903. Due to its deteriorated condition, a replica was carved by Tommie Jimmie Sr in 1978. From bottom to top there is a bear, wolf, shark and raven. It is postulated to be either a crest pole or a legend pole telling the story of Raven, who went underwater to a new world and fell in love with and married Shark, despite her shame at the ugliness of her skin and face. Raven, the legend goes, said true beauty comes from within.

on March 31, 2022Every time a see a totem pole and learn the story of the carved figures that are included I get such a good feeling that the stores and the art is being carried on. They are fascinating to me, and I really love the store of this one. Superb image Terry.

on March 31, 2022These are the original North American artist telling stories with hatchet and chisel. One of our cruises had one of the Native American totem carvers on the ship and he completed a totem in the week he was there. Great shot of this totem.

on March 31, 2022thanks for the comment re: vignetting. I really am not too keen on it either but am trying different things to make our photos not look like 'snapshots'....sometimes it works others not... :-)
