Buttress roots
Buttress roots and fallen leaves of the Kaway tree (Pterocarpus officinalis), Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. Buttress roots are aerial extensions of lateral surface roots that stabilize the tree, especially in the shallow, nutrient-poor soils of the lowland forest, helping the tree to resist toppling in strong winds.
