Mortuary pole, Ninstints
One of the tallest of the mortuary poles still standing at S'Gaang Gwaii (Ninstints), Haida Gwaii, BC. According to Haida traditions, the remains of a chief or high ranking person were placed in a burial box in a cavity in the top of mortuary poles a year after the death. Natural weathering and eventual disintegration are accepted to be a natural part of the life cycle of the poles.
