Bubble-feeding humpback whales with purse seiner
Large numbers of humpback whales congregate off Sitka, Alaska during the annual herring spawning season and they can emerge from the water during their bubble-feeding sessions quite unexpectedly. A large pod of humpback whales, feeding on herring, suddenly emerged from the water just as a purse seiner was passing by. At larger sizes you can even see a few herring leaping from the water between the two middle whales. Notice the baleen showing in the whale at the far left and the herring gulls.

on April 1, 2022Wow, this is phenomenal Terry! So many humpback whales coming up at once would have been a bit scary to the occupants of the Little Lady boat. Fabulous image!

on April 1, 2022Awesome shot of the action. I think I would be a little worried, but the crew seems to be at ease with it so close.
