Ripe persimmons
In the late fall and winter, Shikoku Island is dotted with bright orange persimmons (kaki), Diospyros kaki, hanging from leafless trees. Kaki originated in China and their primary domestic source is Shikoku Island where they have been grown since the 7th century. Kamiyama, Shikoku Island, Japan.

on November 30, 2021I see these persimmons have the same Latin name as ours, but they do look different from the ones I used to have on our tree years ago. I wonder if these will get redder as they ripen. I had no idea that they originated in China and that they grow in Japan. We had one tree (which wasn't awfully well tended) and produced about 2 or 3 fruit yearly.

on November 30, 2021Truthfully, I've never had a persimmons to eat, but I'd try it. Great shot of the fruit of the tree.

on November 30, 2021How wonderful! This reminds me of the persimmons we had when I was a kid. Ours were more red than orange. I loved the bitter sweet taste of the sees. Great shot and good memories.
