Juvenile bald eagle
A juvenile bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) sits on the rocks of the remote Gordon Islands, Haida Gwaii, BC. Relative to past visits, where bald eagles were plentiful, I saw almost no bald eagles on this trip and hope this is not a sign that their numbers are declining.

on August 29, 2021It's very interesting to me to see the juveniles as they are just not that remarkable when you think about what magnificent birds they grow up to be. I love that you captured this young one against those rugged rocks. I too agree that I hope this is not a harbinger of their numbers declining. Great image!

on August 29, 2021Nice environmental shot of the young eagle. Ditto your hopes that this is not a sign of eagle population decline. In my AZ trip, the bird numbers were down from other years, especially the numbers of hummingbirds (there are about 10 species seen there). There were various theories as to why, but no one knows for sure: extreme drought there last year, the fires up north, delayed migration....
