Haida Gwaii toad
The beautiful Western toad (Anaxyrus boreas) is the only amphibian native to Haida Gwaii. Haida Gwaii Western toads are listed as a species of special concern, and numbers are falling. One possibility is that the toads on Haida Gwaii are losing their breeding sites and food to one or both of the introduced frog species now on the islands — tree frogs (Pacific chorus frogs) and northern red-legged frogs. The latter eat the HG toad eggs, tadpoles and young frogs. Introduced racoons will also eat the toads.

on September 7, 2021I'm amazed you were able to get a shot of the toad, it is so well camouflaged! Your introduction of us to all these precarious species on the island is very eye-opening.

on September 7, 2021Outstanding detail in the Haida Gwaii toad...very neat coloring and markings and terrific textures! It seems that our introductions of new species so frequently end up doing harm to our native species.
