High-grading a salmon
The fattiest parts of salmon contain the most calories and bears know this instinctively. So, when the fish are abundant, they prefer to eat the brain and eggs, which contain the highest levels of fat, and discard the rest. This is called high-grading. The discarded bodies add nutrients to the aquatic and forest ecosystems. When salmon are not abundant or are harder to catch, the bears will not be as selective and will eat most of the fish.

on March 3, 2022I guess the parents' admonishment to "clean up your plate" doesn't apply here! Since there are plenty of other birds and animals to finish off the job, I guess nothing goes to waste. I wish humans would learn these values--you would not believe the amount of unused food I see thrown out in our dumpsters here.

on March 3, 2022The brains I did not know, the skin I did. Bears are pretty smart. Your Nikon is a clicking.
