Retaining wall
A Gabion retaining wall along the lower reaches of the Rio el Canal prevents floods from taking out the Carretera Austal, the only (dirt) road connecting northern Chile with southern Chile. On the left side are the spectacular blooms of the Chilean firebush (Embothrium coccineum) and on the right mata negra (Mulguraea tridens?) and lupines (Lupinus polyphyllus).

on March 22, 2021Seeing how far back from the river the retaining wall is, gives an idea of the size and strength of the floods that may threaten the area at times. Great colorful flowers.
