Nurse log
A beautiful nurse log contains a row of many small evergreens. Only when I looked closer did I notice that the lower trunk of every one was bare, and only the tops, which were out of reach of the invasive Sitka deer, had growth. It gave them a strange umbrella-like look. Lyell Island, Haida Gwaii, BC

on July 20, 2021Outstanding shot Terry and a very interesting situation! I've seen a few small trees growing on fallen trees before but never as many or as clearly as this. Very cool!

on July 19, 2021Very interesting growth pattern--I'm glad you are showing us all these different elements, as we probably wouldn't realize what we are seeing, or how they came about.

on July 19, 2021Thank goodness for nurse logs. I love how many of the new and small trees are there. It's too bad that the Sitka are so invasive.
