A mother polar bear with a pair of cubs resting near some Canadian Eskimo dogs, with a male polar bear, distant upper right. Hudson Bay, Churchill, MB. The mother bear is not completely relaxed, not due to the nearness of the dogs, but to the presence of the other bear. I observed that there seemed to be a very tolerant relationship on both sides between the bears and the dogs. I think the bears got a feeling of safeness, when near the dogs, against the predations of large males that can kill cubs and the dogs seemed unfazed at the presence of the bears.
Note: The Canadian Kennel club calls this endangered dog breed the Canadian Eskimo dog, but the preferred term in Nunavat is Canadian Inuit dog.

on March 6, 2022Wonderful shot Terry! I love the poses and details. It's surprising to me that the dogs aren't concerned about these polar bears.

on March 5, 2022This is certainly not what I would expect from either the bears or the dogs. I've always wondered by the adult males can eat young bears or in our case here in Texas, the male alligators eating the little gators. Fabulous shot, Terry.

on March 5, 2022This shot tells a great story, but your explanation really helps us to understand the interactions between the species.
