Ursus species
When I was editing my bear pictures from Churchill, MB, and Chilko, BC, I was struck with the similarity of pose between two different species of Ursus, the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) and the grizzly bear (Ursus arctos horribilis). With climate change, the ranges of the grizzly has expanded north, leading to more overlapping between the two species with increases in hybridization between the two called variously grolars, pizzlies, grizzlar and nanulak, taken from the Inuit names for polar bear (nanuk) and grizzly bear (aklak).

on February 2, 2022Wonderful contrast between the two species! Fabulous images! We watch a lot of nature documentaries and whenever we are watching videos of bears, I compare them to the images you have shot without even thinking about it. Of course, one medium is video, while yours is still photography, but I have to say that you provide my benchmark for excellence!

on February 2, 2022Interesting comparison--so much alike, and yet they really are different. I wonder what the hybrids look like--the hybrid names are funny--I think pizzlies make them sound small and silly, while grolars sound strong and fierce. (My impressions only!)
