Smelling for salmon
The grizzly bear's highly developed sense of smell enables them to detect when there's a salmon in the water. The alert, focused look of this bear suggested she smelled a salmon, born out by her catching one seconds later. Chilko Lake, British Columbia.

on March 2, 2022The bears smelling salmon under the water makes me think of how robins can hear underground earthworms, or how eagles can see prey from 2 miles away --our senses are so meager compared to these amazing creatures. The intent look on this bear's face does suggest readiness for that unwary salmon!

on March 2, 2022This is fabulous! I loved learning that they can smell the salmon in the water. I didn't know that when we went on our bear trip.
