Spituk Gustor festival

Crowds gather around the central courtyard for the annual Gustor festival at Spituk Gompa. This festival takes place in the 11th month of Tibetan Calendar and is famous for marking victory over evil since the 11th century. The current monastery buildings date to the 15th century. Huge crowds of worshipers and monks come from far and wide to the festival. The Ladakh range (crest line of 20,000 ft, or 6500 m), with a coating of snow on the crest, can be seen in the distance.
