Still Life

Logs at the log sort yard, Alliford Bay, Moresby Island, BC. The Haida Gwaii archipelago (Queen Charlotte Islands) has been called the Galapagos of the North, but these days it is under threat due to a variety of environmental issues including clear cut logging of the old growth forests. This image shows mostly young logs at a log sort yard on Morseby Island ready to be transported to barges and ships for transport to Asia. A short while ago, these were once healthy live trees, but they are now lying still and dead, hence 'Still Life'.

The cut logs make me sad--when I see clear-cut forests or parts of forests, it pains me in my heart. I was lucky enough to hike in some old growth forests in Michigan last month--I would hate to see them all gone.

This is a great shot of the Still Life, but it is a sad shot. I can hardly believe how small some of these once healthy trees are. I understand the need for wood, but we should collectively be re-foresting and allowing the new trees to achieve their largest girth before cutting them. And, of course, I suppose the old growth forests in that area, and many others have been gone for a long time.

Excellent POV. Good & interesting info. I had no clue that these were being shipped to Asia.
