Field of feathers
Magellanic penguins (Spheniscus magellanicus) are an endangered South American species of penguins that live in Chile, Argentina and the Falkland Islands. They breed on islands in the Straits of Magellan in January and by March they are fully fledged and ready to go to sea when their downy chick feathers are replaced by waterproof adult feathers. This fledgling has a full set of adult feathers and is surrounded by a field of down that has been shed by the juveniles. You can tell a juvenile from an adult Magellanic penguin by the pink blotched areas on their feet (best larger). Shot at Magdelana Island, Chile.

on February 28, 2019Terrific capture of this cute bird! Interesting info about the identification of the juveniles. Lots of downy feathers about. I just learned all the species of penguins (just something to do before I fall asleep at night).

on February 28, 2019Interesting sight. I suppose that just surviving to this stage represents an achievement. I guess this year's crop is fledging right about now.

on February 28, 2019Terry, I was on that island about 10 years ago, fascinating to see all of the penguins. We arrived on an old ferry and there must have been a 1000 lined up watching us approach the landing, Great shot of this Magellanic. Regarding the lens I was using, it's a 24-85 my go to travel lens.
