Freeze-up
A male polar bear (centre right), Ursus maritimus, walks along the shoreline next to the shorefast ice, with distant open water, Bird Cove, Hudson Bay, Churchill, Manitoba. Shorefast ice is the first ice to form during freeze-up and recent evidence suggest that the polar bears can sometimes catch seals on the shorefast ice in the autumn, but the best hunting happens after the distant pack ice expands to meet the ice developing from shore.
If you can't find the bear in the right centre, it is a side view, walking and facing towards the left with the sun hitting its rear end.
