Sea ice
Near the Eielson Gletscher it was fascinating to see a large area of newly formed sea ice surrounding a small iceberg grounded by the shore. Note the plate-like structures. It is possible the ice formed when fresh glacial meltwater (higher freezing point, lower density) formed a layer over the seawater. Rypefjord, Scoresby Sund, Greenland.
Judith, September is the warmest month, with the least amount of ice. The fresh water layer here freezers at higher temperatures than salt water, and most of this ice will likely melt during the day.
