Winter hummer

Male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) with his feathers puffed up at a feeder during freezing weather. We've had some unusually cold, snowy weather here in Vancouver and I was worried about the little hummers that live in my back yard, so I duck taped a toque to the bottom bowl of the feeder and stuffed some hand and toe warmers between the toque and the feeder, which kept it from freezing and gave a little warmth to the hummer.

You came up with a creative low tech solution to the problem. You can't exactly use immersion heaters like the ones designed for bird baths for a hummingbird feeder. And they need even more calories than usual to keep those tiny bodies warm.

Neat shot of the hummer. It does look very cold with its puffed up feathers. Great image.
