Sun pillar at sunset - Terry Allen
Sun pillar and reflections near sunset, Bjorne Islands, Hall Bredning, Scoresby Sund, East Greenland. Sun pillars are a rare atmospheric phenomena when vertical pillars of light appear to rise from the sun. They are usually seen just after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is not more than 6 degrees above the horizon. This phenomenon occurs when plate shaped ice crystals form in high cirrus or alto clouds and reflect the sunlight towards the observer.
