Dark blue ice
Dark blue crystalline ice in deep cracks at the glacier front, Rollige Brae Glacier, Rodefjord, Scoresby Sund, Greenland.
Crystallization occurs under stress caused by the weight of the overlying snow in the icefield that flows into the glacier. With time and the application of stress, the density of the ice rises by the compression of air bubbles, and at great depths the air is absorbed into the ice crystal lattices, and the ice becomes clear. After 100 years or more, at great depths in ice sheets the density approaches that of pure ice.

on May 28, 2020Interesting process of ice crystalization--I especially like the very blue bergy bit in the water.
