• Traffic circle seen from above at night, Milad Tower, Tehran, Iran (best larger to see the details)

The entire 475 meter tower was moving in the wind, so getting a sharp shot at the low ISO (100) and long shutter speed (20s) I wanted to use was more a question of perseverance than skill.

Other shots from the tower, including a couple of very interesting abstracts with a 3D look can be seen here: http://goo.gl/rtSQg7
• Relaxed, but alert (best larger)

Jaguar (Panthera onca) on the river bank, Rio Cuiaba, Pantanal, Brazil.

The Jaguar is the third largest cat in the world and the only one indigenous to the Americas. It is larger and heavier than the African leopard with a more powerful bite that can go through the skull of a caiman.

Its status is near threatened due to habitat loss and conflicts with ranchers. Jaguar populations in this remote Pantanal region of Brazil are still fairly healthy.
Looking towards Torchal mountain from Milad Tower at night, Tehran, Iran. Note the silhouette of the mountains in the background.

It was very windy at the top of the tower and even with a good tripod it was very difficult to keep the camera 100% steady in such a tall building since the building itself moved with the wind. I braced the tripod against the building structure in the lee of the wind and shot between gusts, but it still required several shots to get it tack sharp.
• Milad tower at night

The Milad tower, built in 2007, is the 6th tallest tower in the world at 435 meters (1427 feet). Its a great place to photograph the city of Tehran from, especially at night, and has a revolving restaurant at the top.
• Storks at sunrise

Pair of Jabiru storks on their nest at sunrise. Every evening the storks went back to their large messy nest on the Fazenda St Tereza and very morning just after sunrise they flew off to fish. I had to get up early to catch them still on the nest. Pixaim River, Pantanal, Brazil
• Portrait of an eagle hunter and his eagle #3, Western Mongolia

Check out his magnificent red fox fur coat. Fox and rabbits are the main prey hunted by the trained eagles, and both species are used for food to supplement their meagre diets in the winter, and for their fur as protection against the bitter weather. The fox fur hat with red silk and feathers (owl I think) at the crown is always part of their traditional attire when they are out with their eagles.
• Ethnic Miao boys from China's only gun village

Basha village in the southeast of Guizhou province, China, is the home of the last tribe of gunmen in China. The Basha are the only tribe that can legally carry real guns in China. The village is isolated from the outside world and the villagers lead a self-sufficient life in the hilly areas of southern China and retain the dressing and living customs hundreds of years ago.

Their traditional dress is a hand woven indigo-dyed black cotton made waterproof and shiny by coating with egg white. The young boys have their heads shaven at around 7 to 15 years of age leaving just a long shank of hair that is twisted into a topnot.

The villagers worship trees as gods. They believe the topnots on their heads represent trees, while the purple-brown clothes they wear represent bark.

All the men carry long flintlock rifles that they shoot in welcoming ceremonies for visitors, and these young boys, dressed in traditional attire, are carrying a shorter version of the guns.
