• Produce at the Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar is a historical market in the center of Tehran. There has been some kind of bazaar on this site for several thousand years, although the recent covered corridors (measuring ~10 km in length) date back around 400 years. It is the largest market of its kind in the world, said to cover an area of around 20 square kilometers, reportedly with two hundred thousand vendors.
• Fast hands

The ethnic Dong people's culture of cloth:
A common sight in Dong villages of Southern China are the deep indigo blue cloths hanging to dry. The women have long been renowned for their skills in weaving and dyeing. According to historical records, Dong cloth-making dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), and the finished material was often carried to the royal palace as tribute.

The process of creating the cloth is arduous. The raw cotton is harvested from Dong farmland, cleaned, and woven into cloth. The Dong women mix indigo plants (Isatis tinctoria, also known as woad) with lime water to make the blue dye. The cloth is dyed in tubs then washed and dried again up to three or four times until the colour is a rich dark blue. Then other plants are added to the dye and the cloth is dyed again, resulting in a deep blue with rosy accents. After a final drying, the cloth is folded, coated with egg white and beaten with a mallet over the course of two weeks until the cloth develops a rich shine. The more it shines, the more precious the cloth is deemed to be.
• Happy lady

Brazilian rider after crossing the Pixaim River on horseback, Pantanal, Brazil. Notice the sun freckles on her face where the light shone through her straw cowboy hat. In strong light it is better to place people in the shade to photograph them. In this case, the shade from her hat prevented harsh shadows on her face and gave her a lovely skin tone.
• Crossing the river

Every year in the fall in the Pantanal they have a festival called Calvacado do Cavalo Pantaneiro (Cavalcade of Pantanal Horses) where ~150 horses and riders party and whoop it up and ride from fazenda to fazenda across the Pixaim River. It is a ribald occasion with lots of drinking, selfies and hilarity as people fall off their horses into the river.

This girl was a good rider and made it across without falling in. Note the sunlight freckles on her face where the light came through her straw cowboy hat.

It was difficult photography since the event took place midday with very bright contrasty light and deep shadows, so even shooting in RAW didn't completely help. I did my best to rescue the photographs in Photoshop, but they would have been better had the event taken place later in the day.

• Iranian saffron with reflections

Saffron is the world's costliest spice by weight and Iran is famous for its saffron, which is produced by painstakingly collecting the stigma from individual crocus flowers (Crocus sativus). Iran produces over 90% of the world's saffron, which has a history going back over 4000 years.

This photo was taken at the Grand Bazaar in Tehran. At first I was put off by all of the reflections in the glass of the shop window but then saw a way that I could have it work for me in the photo.
Great shot Terry! Your travels are so cool, I hope you're having fun! Thanks for your comment on my portrait yesterday, I love hearing feedback. On one hand it's good that the eyes are catching your attention, that's where I want you to look with a portrait. But on the other hand too much eye white is a big no no and the portrait is definitely bordering in that direction. I probably could have squared her face to the camera a bit more so that there is less distance from the pupil to the corner of the eye. But that would split light her face which is something I like in general, but for a corporate headshot I want loop or rembrandt light on the shadow side of her face for the dimension that gives without losing too much in the shadows. Anyway, thanks for making me think about it!
