Glacier penitentes
Tall glacier penitentes mark the front face of Glacier Nef, with shadows and reflections Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael, Aysen, Patagonia, Chile. Penitentes are tall spikes of snow or ice that occur on high-altitude glaciers in the Andes, where the dry air and the sun sublimate the ice directly into water vapor without melting it first.

4 weeks agoOh how I love this Terry! The glacier pieces with their color, shapes and gathered dirt are one of the things I loved best in Alaska. Great image!

4 weeks agoVery different look from your average glacier! Interesting how the penitentes are formed.

4 weeks agoThey look like individual sculptures, whereas one can almost reach out and select one of his/her choosing. The soft, pastel color is very pretty, too!
