There was a constant stream of worshippers going up and down the stairs leading to the candi bentar (split gate) at the Pura Besakih temple complex. Its Hindu origins date back to 1284 when the first Javanese conquerors settled in Bali, but the foundations date back at least 2000 years. This elegant matron, in her colourful traditional garments, paused for a moment to pose on the steps with a beautiful flower arrangement (temple offering) on her head, and the traditional wet rice grains on her forehead that signify that she has been up to the altar to pray.
