Terracotta army
Terracotta horses and warriors emerging from the rubble of Pit 1, Lishan, Xian, China. The Terracotta Army is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was discovered in 1974 by farmers digging a water well near the tomb mound of Qin She Huang at Mount Li (Lishan). Qin Shi Huang united the war lords of China and was the first Emperor of China. The warriors, horses and chariots buried with the emperor in 210–209 BCE is a form of funerary art to protect the emperor in the afterlife.

on December 16, 2017Can you just imagine what the first folks to discover these warriors must have thought, stumbling upon this? Terrific capture!

on December 16, 2017Interesting to see this 'in progress' shot for comparison with another shot of yours of a more finished and restored part of the excavation. Anymore, anyone who visits China, at least for the first, and possibly only, time, wants to visit this site. And why not? It's amazing.

on December 15, 2017Can you imagine the time and artistry that it took to create all of the warriors and their horses? I've read that there are thousands and thousands of warriors, plus horses, chariots and other figures. It looks like as Judith said, that they are still excavating. This is an amazing place. Thank you for sharing the photos. It had to be a thrilling site to see in person.
