Ancient pine bonsai

One of the many old bonsai trees that have been carefully cultivated for many generations that can be seen in the Bao Family Garden, Shexian, Anhui Province, China. The pottery containers for the bonsai in this famous garden are also notable for variety and quality.

FYI: the oldest bonsai are around 800 to 1000 years old. Mind boggling to think of several hundred years of continuous care, sometimes within the same family.

Bonsai's are just fascinating! I wish I had a green thumb so I could try my hand at one. You are so right - it's just amazing that some of them have been cared for for 800-1,000 years. This is a real beauty! And very well captured.

Lovely shot...it is amazing to me how old some of these bonsai can be...thousands of years that someone has been caring for them!

What a pleasure to see such cultivated treasures that represent an unbroken line of skill and loving care over the generations.
It does get me wondering, though. Do styles in bonsai evolve? Would, for example, this current version of this particular specimen comport with the vision it's initial creators had for it?
