Polar bear calling at the lodge door, Seal River Lodge
The Seal River Lodge is on Hudson's Bay about 30 min by plane north of Churchill Manitoba. It offers an unprecedented opportunity to photograph polar bears on foot (and yes, I was on foot outside the lodge to take this photo). This was November and the bears hang around waiting for freeze-up. They haven't eaten for about 5 months, but are more curious than aggressive. Their preferred food is seal meat, not photographers :-), which they hunt from the ice flows after freeze-up. There is a fenced area at the back that is used to leave the lodge so you can see if any bears are close by. Photographing the bears is safe as we always have a bear-knowlegable guide with a pocket full of rocks and a gun whenever we are out. The amazing thing is that even minimal defenses (throwing a rock) were ever needed.
