Man tending the rice terraces
The rice terraces have been in constant use for over 1300 years. In response to Jim's comment from yesterday, I imagine they must require contrast vigilance to keep them in repair and I would see the local people, such as this man with his machete, walking along the tops of the dykes that separated individual paddies, presumably keeping an eye on their condition. The engineering feat to make these terraces, each one level and filled with water, boggles the mind.
