Read MoreAnna's hummingbird at a feeder
The hummingbirds are back at my feeder again here in Vancouver, at greater numbers than before. Mostly Anna's hummingbirds (Calypte anna) but for the first time, Rufous hummingbirds as well. This is a female Anna's hummingbird perched at the feeder. With the increased numbers there is some territoriality going on and little fights breaking out as one female in particular wants the feeder all to herself. The Rufous hummingbirds, being newcomers, are a lot more shy than the annas and more difficult to get a good photo of, but I'll keep trying. (best larger)
Since I don't have a strobe setup to freeze the wing action, I shot this on a bright afternoon and put the shutter speed up to 1/5000 second.

on May 27, 2016This is amazing!!!! I put my feeders out a few weeks ago because I saw one, but haven't seen one since. We have the Mexican (I think) hummers and they aren't as colorful as the Anna or others but I sure do love watching them. Hopefully , they'll find the feeders again soon.
