Khmer dancer

Khmer classical dancer in the costume of a male Ngoh role (male roles are usually played by a female dancer), sheltering under a doorway of the Elephant Terrace in the rain. During the Khmer Rouge era (1975-79) 90% of Khmer classical performers were put to death. After the fall of the Khmer Rouge, surviving artists revived the centuries old classical dancer tradition and it was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List in 2003.

Their Ming Dynasty culture survives a few Old Han villages in Guizhou Province to this day. The women still pluck the hair high on their foreheads.

What a contrast - the beautiful girl and outfit against the old stone. Well framed and captured.

I have read that before about many of the "male" characters are played by females. This is a lovely shot. I need to look up the reason for the performers being put to death. This is a great shot!

Great shot of this young lady. Good to know that some of their tradition survived that horrible era of Khmer Rouge.
